A Few Quick Lines
A few quick lines are enough to make a face
or a particular bird, and just a trace
of shading shows where the light is coming from.
A turn of phrase can make emotions hum,
a single word recall forgotten friends,
or even someone you knew in passing once
at a party you thought would never end,
whose quiet voice drowned out all the fun
and told you of a sketch that he’d once seen—
perhaps he had nothing else to give—
a few quick lines that make a madman live.
