June

There are llamas in the buttercups.
Parakeets nest above a million suns
of lion’s teeth; we journey on.

Ox-eye daisies constellate the line,
cloaking the embankment. Everywhere’s
shine is verdant, gild or lapis Byzantine.

Details spread their waves, blending
crowded opulence behind astonished glass,
until one child-eyed stare sights neither due

nor memory, only this stilled and brilliant
instant of blooms and beasts caught unremoved,
exquisite at the edge of light.
