Common Milkweed (Asclepias Syriaca)
The waning moon is an empty boat,
sending ripples of silence through the lapis.
And the few acres of rye that grow beneath
are muted by a wash of late autumn snow.
The dried husks of milkweed–silken fibers
now culled from their ivory crescents–
line the margin of that field, poised atop canes
stripped bare of leaves by November’s winds.
Like the moon’s own brood staring heavenward,
the pods reach above their shadowed thicket,
eager to learn how to glide through the cold months
without rudder, sail or a semblance of motion.
