After James Joyce’s Anna Livia Plurabelle, 1928

Shallow in the river Liffey
she, not easy to fathom.
See her sway in the pull of the unseen
current, fluid elemental Liffey
always lilting in the name of Anna
the Allmaziful…her rill be run
Anna Livia Plurabelle polyphonous as Finn
MacCool, her blaziness the river running on–
Ho! We’ll tell, we two old washerwomen
flip flapping Earwicker’s wet clothes on stones
alert to gossip smelly as Anna’s gardin of Erin
the chittering waters all Livia’s daughtersons
and livvly Anna laughing innocefree and fugal
riverword wordriver the word the all in all
