Last Poem for You

I liked to brush against your skin in broad daylight
catching you unaware in the nonchalance of love
I knew you by your words and arms
arresting me in night tumbles on the stairs
you liked to remind me of your devotion
to the present moment, terrified by this
I stole moments of refuge with you
between mangoes and blackberry feasts
bound in sweat and tangles with everything to lose
I learned your heart best
when you couldn’t see me watching you
in poems, wine, butter and toast

when released from a height,
I saw how the sun melts
quickest at the end
my sound crushed by waves
from the island of wild blue into
the last quiet nothing
